Their mission: transform an entire industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from coconut farmers cooperatives signed a Statement of Commitment during a two-day regional summit in December. The pledge affirmed their dedication to strengthening the coconut sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The signing marked a turning point. No longer would farmers see themselves as mere beneficiaries. They would become leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cooperative Development Authority Region VII spearheaded the Dec. 9-10 gathering at Golden Peak Hotel &amp; Suites. Coconut farmers, cooperative leaders, government partners and development advocates attended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CDA Chairman USec. Alexander B. Raquepo delivered a keynote message. So did Regional Director Cristina H. Villamil and CDA Board Member ASec. Virgilio R. Lazaga. Their theme: Coconut farmers cooperatives must lead toward financial inclusion, good governance and sustainable industry transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The summit unveiled &#8220;Hakhak: The Way-Up There,&#8221; a coffee table book. CDA Region VII wrote, designed and published it. The book captures stories of coconut farmers cooperatives rising above challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A trade fair opened the event. Virgin coconut oil, coco sugar, handicrafts and innovative value-added products filled the booths. DTI Region VII Acting Regional Director Esperanza L. Melgar joined CDA officials for the ribbon-cutting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultural performances set the tone. The Lamac Multipurpose Cooperative CYP Performing Arts showcased Filipino heritage and Cebu&#8217;s vibrant culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Day 1 featured presentations on support mechanisms. ASec. Luz H. Yringco emphasized financial inclusion in empowering farmers. Engr. Rhea Ocay of the Philippine Coconut Authority provided updates on the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from multiple agencies participated. The Department of Labor and Employment, Social Security System and Advance Health Services Cooperative discussed farmer welfare programs. DSWD Region VII Director Shalaine Marie S. Lucero addressed social resilience through cooperativism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Day 2 focused on transformation strategies. Speakers from LAMAC MPC and AgriCOOPh explained how cooperatives can transform coconut communities. They stressed strong internal systems and community-centered programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pag-IBIG Fund Information Officer Margaux Kristel De La Paz outlined housing, savings and loan opportunities. These programs could benefit cooperative members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Regional Director Gloria V. Barrido closed the summit. She called on participants to maintain momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gathering strengthened partnerships and deepened awareness of development interventions. It showcased cooperative success stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, it reaffirmed a collective commitment.
