Ruth Angelique R. Pasos, from Pasig City and PMA “Mabalasik” Class 2019, and Second Lt. Cherky E. Embudo, from Las Pinas City and PMA “Bagong Sinag” Class of 2024, both assigned to the Air Education and Training Command at Fernando Air Base in Lipa City, Batangas.

The two officers perished in the crash, which occurred around 10:30 a.m. when their Aermacchi SF-260 trainer aircraft went down in Barangay Cabuyao in Tuba, Benguet. They had departed Fernando Air Base as part of a formation flight bound for Baguio City on a navigation mission over northern Luzon — a routine exercise designed to test trainees’ situational awareness and flight planning over mountainous terrain.

The aircraft lost communication minutes before it was scheduled to arrive at Loakan Airport in Baguio City. Search teams later located the wreckage in a mountainous area in Tuba.

“The Philippine Air Force extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, loved ones, friends, and fellow airmen of our fallen pilots,” the PAF said in a statement.

The air force did not immediately release details on the cause of the crash, but said an investigation had already been opened.

The SF-260 is one of the PAF’s primary trainer aircraft, used to prepare military pilots before they transition to helicopters and combat jets. The light-frame, aerobatic-capable platform has long been a cornerstone of the service’s pilot training program.

“Their courage, dedication, and commitment to duty will always be remembered by the Philippine Air Force and the nation they faithfully served,” the PAF said.

The crash comes as the PAF has been intensifying its air defense and territorial security missions amid growing operational demands. In recent years, the military has moved to strengthen pilot training as it acquires new aircraft and upgrades its aerial capabilities.

“Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten, and their memory will continue to inspire generations of Filipino airmen,” the PAF said.

Two Philippine Air Force pilots were killed Wednesday when their trainer aircraft crashed into a mountainous area in this Benguet town during a military training flight, the air force said, cutting short the lives and careers of two young officers who had dedicated themselves to service in the sky.
